Australian wine industry meeting to discuss "exits"

The ABC radio network is reporting a meetingwill be held  today in Sydney to  discuss the drop in winegrape prices and the jump in the number of vineyards being abandoned across Australia.

The main cause of the problem is an oversupply of grapes, which has slashed returns for growers, the ABC reports.

The NSW Wine Industry Association and the Department of Primary Industries are meeting to discuss the issue.

Association president, David Lowe, said legislation changes may be needed to tackle the growing problem.

"With neglected vineyards there's a biosecurity problem," he says.

"You get cross-over of pathogens, the vineyards look unsightly, there are weeds, and those people who genuinely want to maintain and sustain their business are finding it increasingly hard.

"We'll be meeting to talk about what we can do to inform landholders to see what's available for them, so they can exit the industry."
