NZ wines inflict pain on Aussie producers

Is it a New Zealand wine invasion of Australia, or is it just normal international trade?

Some people in the Australian wine industry are irked by the growing popularity of New Zealand wine wines on their local market.

Others are more relaxed about it, pointing out that Australia has been exporting wine to New Zealand for decades.

February - March 2010

Grape-growers around the country are worried about the chances of another big harvest this year. New Zealand Winegrowers had estimated the ideal harvest - not too big and not too small - to be 265,000 tonnes. But some pundits are predicting the crop will come out about 20 thousand tonnes up on that figure.

In our February-March issue, wine writer Peter Saunders takes a different view from many commentators, saying even if 2010 brings another big crop, innovation, hard work and intelligent marketing of our wine is the answer.

In our latest issue we put the focus on wine industry technology - showcasing new products and services and looking at clever applications of existing equipment, software and systems.

Finding skilled, hard-working and reliable workers for vineyard work has never been easy for New Zealand grape-growers. But Max Marriott reports from Central Otago that teams of men from Vanuatu are proving to be the answer to vineyard managers' prayers. We meet some of the ni-Vans, who talk about hard work and the touchy subject of alcohol.
Ron Chittenden from EIT in Hawke's Bay takes a technical look at syrah and viognier co-fermentation and we feature aspects of labelling, from marketing to design issues.

We report on a group of high-end wine marketers who are pooling their resources to reach wine buyers overseas.

We report on the New Zealand Wine Company which says it will take a "disciplined" approach to business in 2010, and in Australia grape-growers are looking optimistically at a growing demand from China for top-quality table grapes.
